Nutritional Evaluation and Counseling
Our registered dieticians support each patient in nourishing his/her body in a healthful way and help them to understand the process involved. Nutrition counseling typically focuses on restoring nutritional status for underweight, “normal weight,” and overweight individuals. Nutritional education and meal planning are tailored to each individual client’s needs to help them to interrupt symptom use and regain trust in their body’s ability to regulate eating.
We take great pride in the nutrition philosophy and food approach at Cedar Springs Austin. Our nutrition team works with patients’ to obtain and maintain a healthy body weight, normalize eating patterns, assist with avoidance of any abnormal eating disorder related behaviors, and achieve a decrease in feared foods.
With careful consideration, our nutrition philosophy fully encompasses two important aspects of recovery: nutrition stabilization and normalization of food beliefs and behaviors.
Our state-of-the-art kitchen allows for creative and healthy food preparation.
Nutrition stabilization is one of the physical aspects of eating disorder recovery. In working with each individual at Cedar Springs Austin, nutritional stabilization is a priority. We address these needs with personal meal plans, individual nutrition appointments and consideration for approved physical activity levels. Our team approach reinforces that weight restoration and management are only one aspect of overall recovery.
“Normalization” of Food Beliefs and Behaviors

At Cedar Springs Austin, we encourage balance and flexibility with food choices by providing a supportive and open environment to discuss and re-direct food beliefs and behaviors. By exploring underlying emotions and interpersonal factors that contribute to an eating disorder, the individual works with our therapists to replace uncontrolled behaviors and negative feelings with a strong sense of self and a positive self-esteem.
Cedar Springs Austin offers group and individual therapy in confidential, healing areas.
Psychotherapy aims to normalize’ one’s thinking around food, weight, shape, body image, self-esteem, and stress-related management. Evidence -based studies looking at the most effective treatments for eating disorders highlight cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). CBT focuses on placing one’s individual symptoms in context—increasing awareness of the internal, environmental, and social triggers that serve to reinforce eating behaviors.
Group and Family Therapy
Therapy at Cedar Springs Austin occurs on a group and individual basis. Groups meet to share common experiences to alleviate feelings of shame and isolation. The sharing of common experiences breaks these barriers and inspires self-understanding as each person learns to identify unhealthy patterns and develop healthy alternatives.
Family support and involvement are important components of eating disorder recovery. Often, family members feel shame and guilt and sometimes blame themselves for a loved one’s eating disorder. This sense of guilt and shame tends to make it difficult for family members to provide positive support. Therefore, family based treatment can help develop positive family relationships that in turn help the patient achieve recovery. We encourage family members to participate in family sessions and to learn about eating disorders and what it takes to attain and maintain recovery from an eating disorder.
Interpersonal psychotherapy is important as many times eating disorder symptoms occur in the context of relationships. While relationships do not cause an eating disorder, family members and loved ones often times are helpful resources that aid the individual with an eating disorder in recovery. Examining patterns of current and past relationships is often beneficial in helping the patient with an eating disorder get and stay better. Interpersonal therapy focuses on life transitions, bereavement and loss, boundaries, communications, and family roles.
Our staff psychiatrist provides psychiatric assessment and ongoing medication management for patients who require psychiatric treatment beyond that which is provided in individual and group therapy sessions. Individuals with eating disorders often have other psychiatric issues such as anxiety, depression or obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) that need to be addressed in their recovery. Our psychiatrist is a key member of our team who works with individuals regarding consideration of medications that may be incorporated into treatment of the eating disorder or other related conditions.
Patients with eating disorders are at risk for a variety of acute as well as chronic and potentially disabling medical conditions associated with abnormalities in nutrition. These medical problems affect cardiac, musculoskeletal, kidney, neurological, autonomic and endocrine systems of the body. Medical problems associated with eating disorders may result in acute, life-threatening emergencies or chronic and disabling conditions. Patients admitted to Cedar Springs Austin will have the opportunity to work with our staff nurse, who will coordinate appropriate medical services through your primary care physician and/or a medical provider in the community.
